Abstract
Pomegranate seed oil (PSO) is rich in punicic acid, a conjugated linolenic acid associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in experimental models. These properties create a plausible rationale for studying PSO as an adjunct to standard treatment during recovery from acute kidney injury (AKI). This narrative review evaluates the efficacy and safety evidence relevant to that proposal. Animal studies of gentamicin-, cisplatin-, mercury-, and other toxin-associated renal injury have reported lower oxidativestress, improved biochemical markers, and less histological damage with PSO. Human trials of PSO have been conducted in hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes, menopausal symptoms, and mild cognitive impairment, but not specifically in patients with AKI.
