Abstract
This article explores the gut-brain connection, detailing the bidirectional communication pathways between the digestive tract and the central nervous system through nerves, hormones, immune signals, and the microbiome. It discusses the anatomy of the enteric nervous system, the role of the vagus nerve as a primary communication channel, and key chemical messengers such as serotonin, GABA, short-chain fatty acids, and cytokines. Furthermore, the article examines the impact of the human microbiome on health and behavior, noting findings from animal studies and human trials. It evaluates how dietary patterns, including fiber-rich plants, fermented foods, polyphenols, and ultra-processed foods, influence microbial diversity and systemic inflammation. Finally, the text highlights emerging applications in nutritional psychiatry and clinical interventions, such as psychobiotics and dietary programs like the SMILES trial, while emphasizing the interconnected nature of physical and mental well-being.
