Abstract

This article explores the role of metacognitive learning strategies in enhancing English language proficiency among university-level ESL learners. Drawing on four years of classroom teaching experience and a substantial body of cognitive and applied linguistics research, the study examines how the explicit development of planning, monitoring, and evaluation strategies — the three core dimensions of metacognition — equips language learners with the self-regulatory tools they need to direct their own learning, overcome linguistic challenges, and sustain progress beyond the boundaries of formal instruction. The article presents a theoretically grounded account of metacognition in second language acquisition, identifies the most pedagogically significant metacognitive strategy types, and describes practical classroom-based approaches for developing metacognitive awareness across reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Classroom evidence with measurable outcomes demonstrates that learners who receive explicit metacognitive strategy instruction outperform those who do not across all four language skills, and report significantly higher levels of learning autonomy, confidence, and academic resilience. The article concludes that metacognitive strategy instruction is not a supplementary pedagogical refinement but a foundational component of effective English language teaching, particularly for learners who aspire to independent, self-directed language development beyond the classroom.
