Abstract

The English language has undergone significant transformations over the past 1,500 years. From its early roots in Old English to the globalized version we know today, each period of change has been shaped by historical events, cultural influences, and linguistic evolution. This article traces the development of the English language through four major stages—Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Modern English—examining the factors that influenced these changes, such as invasions, conquests, and literary advancements. It also explores the impact of colonialism and globalization on the expansion and diversification of English into a world language, emphasizing the role of technology and media in shaping contemporary usage.
